What are "essential oils"?

These are the concentrated "essences" of plants, derived mainly by distillation.  They are very powerful, thus it is all the more important to be sure of their purity before use on the body. With the exception of lavender and tea tree, essential oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil [vegetable source] for safety. And, though some sources say differently, internationally respected aromatherapy experts caution against taking them internally-- they are meant to be taken in by nose or skin or both. *"Fragrance" Oils and "Perfume Oils" [unless labeled as Natural Perfume oils made solely with essential oils] are NOT aromatherapy and offer no health benefits.

How are they used?

There are many ways to obtain the benefits of these precious essences.  They may simply be inhaled from the bottle or an aromatherapy "inhaler", used in therapeutic baths and massage, worn on aromatherapy jewelry or in a carrier oil as a fragrance on the skin, diffused into the air by many different methods, in topical applications and in household cleaners and air refreshers, to mention some options.

How to judge quality?

Your nose, which becomes more discerning with practice, will tell you. You are looking for such descriptives as "clean"; "fresh"; "potent"; "vital"; "alive". As you learn to compare one product with another, you will grow more aware of the critical differences. We are very demanding when it comes to the quality of our oils.

What are some traditional uses for these oils?

They are used as therapeutic agents for depression; anxiety and stress; to renew aging skin or help correct skin conditions; headaches; for hair growth, sexual health; aches and pains and much, much more.

Keep in mind-- Essential oils are concentrated and powerful . Use them only as directed, and take the following statement seriously:

Note:  DURING PREGNANCY [just the same as with herbs, supplements, medications and so forth] do not use essential oils without the guidance of a knowledgeable, trusted professional. Many essential oils should be avoided completely during pregnancy due to their particular qualities and effects. 

 A Note about "notes":

Top Notes: Scents that are perceived immediately or a few minutes after inhaling an oil or applying a perfume. Top notes create the scents that form the initial impression of a scent.  The scents of this note class are usually described as "fresh", "assertive" or "sharp". The compounds that contribute to top notes are strong in scent, very volatile, and evaporate quickly. Citrus and ginger are common top notes.

Middle Notes: The scent that emerges after the top notes. The middle note compounds form the "heart", or main body, of a aroma and act to smoothe the sharpness from the initial impression associated with the top notes. Not surprisingly, the scent of middle note compounds are usually more mellow and "rounded". Scents from this note class appear anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour after the application of a perfume. Lavender and rose are typical middle notes.

Base Notes: The scent that appears after the departure of the middle notes. Base notes bring depth and solidness to a fragrance. Compounds of this class are usually the fixatives used to hold and boost the strength of the lighter top and middle notes. The compounds of this class of scents are typically rich and "deep" and are usually not perceived until 30 minutes or more after the application of the perfume. Musk, vetiver, sandalwood, woody oils in general, and scents of plant resins are commonly used as base notes.
