Conditions, & the Herbs Most Often Suggested

 

 

The following information is taken from results of documented studies. While the many specific sources aren't listed here, we'll be pleased to provide that information on request.

Note that several herbs may be shown under a condition. As with medications, a particular herb may work better for one individual than another one would. We suggest that one be tried, and if the results aren't as good as hoped for, then another one.

As ever, if you're pregnant or taking prescribed medications, we stress that 
a personal physician be consulted before taking herbs, any other kind of dietary supplement, over the counter medications, or other prescription drugs. 
 



A.D.D. and A.D.H.D.
: Rhodiola rosea- especially for A.D.D., its benefits are superlative; hyperactive individuals should use extra care, and introduce it in very tiny amounts, to avoid becoming more hyperactive [call with questions about this].
Valerian Root- Studies have shown Valerian to be a valid choice as an alternative to pharmaceuticals. It slows motor activity (without side effects) at the same time it focuses concentration. And unlike drugs, it actually encourages restful sleep. *"A.D.D. Focus", an original formula by The Well, is a combination of Valerian (the primary ingredient) and Catnip (which enhances the calming effect without sedating). Results reported are impressive.

AGING: Ginkgo Biloba- mental function; stroke prevention; mood elevation; circulation; Ginseng- Tonic; mental & physical energy; appetite improvement; Gotu Kola- mental & physical energy; longevity; skin cell regeneration; St. John's Wort-depression; energy level; pain reduction. Antioxidant herbs oppose aging process:  examples, Oregano; Rosemary; Turmeric

ALLERGIES: Stinging Nettle- A potent antihistamine; helps treat respiratory symptoms of allergy; hayfever; shown to reduce allergic response by preventing rupture of the mast cell wall and thereby the release of histamines; Ginkgo Biloba- Interferes with a body chemical (platelet-activating factor) which plays a key role in triggering allergic response
TIP: Watch for reactions to foods, very often a big factor in allergic condtions.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE:  Turmeric- Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid protein ``plaques'' within the brain. In studies in rats, the curcumin in Turmeric ``not only reduces the amyloid, but also reduces the (brain's) response to the amyloid". Conductors of study remark that Rosemary and Ginger have similar properties and need to be examined as well for their effects on the condition.

ANXIETY:  Kava Kava- shown to be effective in easing anxiety; treating panic attacks; insomnia; Rhodiola rosea- even in severely stressful conditions, can bring focused calm and a feeling of well-being within one-half hour or less; Valerian- for tension; anxiety; nervousness; insomnia; Chamomile- anti-stress; relaxing; Passionflower- Calming; soothing. Useful essential oil- Lavender: relaxing; calming. (inhale; apply topically; mist bed linens and the space around you) Never ingest essential oils.

ARTHRITIS: Turmeric or Ginger Root- effective anti-inflammatories and antioxidants; Burdock- used as system cleanser; for elimination of toxins contributing to joint pain; Devil's Claw- studies show it to be quite effective for artiritic pain; Kava Kava- contains two pain-relieving chemicals shown to be as effective as aspirin; Cat's Claw- has been studied for its benefits for rheumatoid arthritis without over-stimulating the immune system, among its many other uses.

ASTHMA; BRONCHITIS; EMPHYSEMA: Mullein- expectorant; antispasmodic; Eucalyptus- expectorant; Stinging Nettle- potent antihistamine; to help treat respiratory symptoms of allergy; hayfever; shown to reduce allergic response; Ginkgo Biloba- interferes with a body chemical (platelet-activating factor) which plays a key role in triggering allergic response & spasms of the bronchial tubes

BREAST ENHANCEMENT: Fenugreek, Fennel and Saw Palmetto are all known to increase breast size in women.

BURSITIS; TENDINITIS: Turmeric or  Ginger Root- effective anti-inflammatories and antioxidants; Turmeric- contains curcumin; proven as effective as cortisone in treating inflammation; Burdock- can be impressively effective for joint pain & stiffness; Kava Kava- contains pain-relieving compounds; relaxing to pain-tense muscles

CANCER: Red Clover- contains genistein, which helps prevent tumors from growing new blood vessels to feed themselves (means it's anti-angiogenic); Turmeric- its cancer-preventative properties have been well documented. 
SOME CANCER PREVENTION OPTIONS: More fruits, vegetables, grains & soy foods; less red meats & fats; least possible medications. More whole foods; less processed foods with additives such as artificial flavorings & colorings. Get fresh air & exercise; keep moving. Lessen stress; relax & play.

CANDIDA / CANDIDIASIS (Systemic Yeast Infection): Echinacea- stimulates white blood cells to devour yeast organisms; Pau d'Arco- contains two effective anti-fungal compounds; Sage- contains a mixture of anti-candida compounds; Black Walnut- antifungal; Oregano- powerful antifungal.  ALSO HELPFUL: Probiotics; Garlic; Grapefruit Seed Extract; Licorice tincture.

CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME: Rhodiola rosea- perhaps the single most effective tonic/adaptogenic herb on the planet; not only enlivens body systems, but maximizes function of the entire endocrine system; Siberian Ginseng [we no longer bother to carry Asian nor American ginsengs, as they're no more effective, and cost a great deal more] Increases resistance to stress; reduces fatigue & improves alertness, coordination, memory & coping abilities. Antiviral herbs, combinations of which have proven helpful: Lemon Balm (Melissa); Echinacea; Eucalyptus; Ginger Root; Licorice

CIRCULATORY PROBLEMS: Ginkgo Biloba- Increases circulation by dilating arteries; can help prevent stroke as well; Hawthorn Berry- Increases circulation by dilating arteries; helps lower blood pressure as well. ALSO HELPFUL: Garlic; ginger

COLDS; FLU: "On Guard", our powerfully effective natural antibiotic/antiviral formula- use at first sign of symptoms; Echinacea; also Goldenseal Root- Stimulates immune system; anti-viral; antibacterial; to reduce symptoms; Eucalyptus- decongestant; Mullein- expectorant; keeps phlegm loose; Ginger Root- Anti-viral; to reduce cough & fever. USEFUL ESSENTIAL OIL: Inhaling Eucalyptus oil can ease congestion; open sinuses (Never ingest essential oils)

DEPRESSION: "Uplift 1 [for low energy types who are low in spirit, not enjoying life, unmotivated] " or "Uplift 2" [for agitated, irritable, frustrated types; possible anger issues {*outsells version 1 at least four to one!}]; St. John's Wort- For mild to moderate depression, it's effective for many; Siberian Ginseng- ("Eleuthero") General tonic; good for mental & physical energy; helps improve sense of well-being; Ginkgo Biloba- Especially good for elderly people who have decreased blood flow to the head.

FUNGAL INFECTIONS: Pau d'Arco- Contains 3 antifungal compounds; use topically & orally (the TINCTURE); Turmeric- Orally or topically (the TINCTURE); Oregano- powerful antifungal; Grapefruit Seed Extract- antifungal, antibiotic; Tea Tree essential oil-  very useful for fungal infections including athlete's foot. Apply topically only. HELPFUL: Garlic (Orally & topically); Lemongrass Oil (topically)

GALLSTONES, KIDNEY STONES: Turmeric- Contains curcumin, which increases the solubility of bile, helping prevent as well as eliminate gallstones; Milk Thistle- Helpful in preventing gallstones. (avoid, if stones already present); Stinging Nettle- To help prevent & treat kidney stones.
TIP: Try parsley tea, a great diuretic; helps prevent stones.

HEADACHE: Feverfew: Studies show that, used regularly, it reduces the frequency & severity of migraines; Lemon Balm-  Also known as Melissa, this herb is recommended for treatment of migraine; Kava Kava- Contains two pain-relieving compounds as effective as aspirin. ESSENTIAL OILS: Peppermint [mixed with vegetable oil] or Lavender essential oils, rubbed on temples, can help relieve headache pain

HEARTBURN; INDIGESTION: Ginger- Very soothing to the stomach; good for symptoms of indigestion; Chamomile- considered a good choice for heartburn.; Fennel- To soothe the digestive tract & treat heartburn; also reduces gas

HEART DISEASE: Hawthorn Berry- Heart tonic; lowers blood pressure through its vasodilating ability [relaxes blood vessel walls allowing the heart to work with less effort], can help congestive heart symptoms; helps blood flow more easily; research shows it can help prevent heart attack; Motherwort-  Chinese studies show it can slow a rapid heartbeat; be helpful with arrythmia; help reduce anxiety, too; Valerian- Helps lower blood pressure; improves heart's pumping ability. *REMAIN UNDER YOUR DOCTOR'S CARE.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Hawthorn Berry- Relaxes blood vessel walls, especially coronary arteries; lessening heart stress; Kudzu Root- Contains puerarin, which helps normalize blood pressure. Puerarin has 100 times the antioxidant activity of vitamin E, helping prevent heart disease and cancer.
TIP: Garlic, celery, onion, tomato, carrot & fennel can help lower blood pressure. *REMAIN UNDER YOUR DOCTOR'S CARE.

HIGH BLOOD SUGAR: Gymnema sylvestre- An herb from India which has shown to help regulate blood sugar; seems to boost insulin production; Kudzu Root- Helps normalize blood sugar (& blood pressure) and control food cravings; Fenugreek- Contains 6 compounds that help regulate blood sugar levels (& cholesterol).
ALSO HELPFUL: garlic; onion; beans; turmeric

HIGH CHOLESTEROL:  Turmeric- is capable of attaining better results than cholesterol drugs, and without their side effects; Fenugreek- Its cholesterol-lowering activity has been demonstrated in studies; Ginger- Many studies show it helps to lower cholesterol. ALSO HELPFUL: flaxseed meal; cinnamon powder; garlic; carrots; avocado; beans; fiber; celery

INSOMNIA: Kava Kava- Tests have shown it to be as effective as some prescription sleep aids; Catnip- It has a calming effect on humans; a natural sleep enhancer without side effects; Valerian- Long used for insomnia; works well for most people;  Lemon Balm (Melissa) Has both sedative & stomach-soothing actions; Chamomile- Calming; conducive to sleep

LIVER FUNCTION: Milk Thistle- Protects liver against damage from alcohol, hepatitis, toxins and can even regenerate liver cells already damaged; Dandelion- supports and enhances liver function; Turmeric- Contains several compounds that both cleanse and protect the liver. *LIVER CLEANSING HERBS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME OF DAY AS PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.

HERPES VIRUS (genital herpes, cold sores, shingles): Lemon Balm- (Melissa) Has both antiviral and anti-herpes properties. Contains polyphenols which can prevent viruses from attaching to cells. Use orally and apply topically [avoid use on sensitive genital tissues] ; Echinacea- Has antiviral and immune-stimulating properties. Take orally immediately on noticing symptoms. ESSENTIAL OILS (Dilute in a carrier oil & apply directly): Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Tea Tree. [Never ingest essential oils]

LUNGS- ( ASTHMA; BRONCHITIS; EMPHYSEMA):  Mullein- expectorant; antispasmodic; Eucalyptus-  expectorant; Stinging Nettle- A potent antihistamine; to help treat respiratory symptoms of allergy; hayfever; shown to reduce allergic response; Ginkgo Biloba- Interferes with a body chemical (platelet-activating factor) which plays a key role in triggering allergic response & spasms of the bronchial tubes.

MENTAL FUNCTION: Rhodiola rosea- perhaps the most impressive plant in its ability to enhance mental function; increasing focus; retention of information, etc.; Ginkgo Biloba- Shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer's Disease; assists ability to focus, concentrate; recall. Turmeric- Studies indicate that it helps prevent the formation in the brain of the plaques associated with Alzheimer's Disease. And these three herbs preserve acetylcholine, a brain chemical needed for good mental functioning: Rosemary- anti-oxidant; the "memory herb", Gotu Kola- used to maintain mental vigor, & Sage- anti-oxidant; prevention of cell damage.

MENSTRUAL : Perfect Period- our original formula; corrects menstrual problems by balancing hormones-- effective for irregular cycles; pain; excessive bleeding; PMS & symptoms of endometriosis. MENOPAUSE: Black Cohosh- good source of plant estrogens; helps symptoms related to menopause-- it's usually the first choice in herbs; Red Clover- estrogenic, also may help prevent cancer, especially breast cancer; Alfalfa- high in estrogens (also may reduce symptoms of arthritis); Dandelion- helps prevent osteoporosis; St. John's Wort- effective for the mild to moderate depression that may accompany menopause.
TIP: Natural progesterone cream from soy and wild yam; Soy products (capsules, soy milk, soy protein, etc.) have proven to be helpful with menopausal symptoms. Avoid in presence of hypothyroidism.

NAUSEA; MOTION SICKNESS; DIZZINESS: Ginger Root- shown to be as effective as commercial motion sickness medications; Peppermint- cooling, anesthetic soother; Catnip- helpful for stomach upset; gas; Chamomile- soothing to stomach; nerves

OSTEOPOROSIS:  Alfalfa- good source of minerals, vitamins, and chlorophyll; Dandelion- source of calcium and magnesium, plus other vitamins and minerals; Horsetail contains silicon in an easily absorbable form, improving calcium utilization & strengthening bones [avoid during pregancy as Horsetail lowers amount of B1 in the body]; Oats and Oatstraw are good sources of calcium. Kelp- source of many vitamins and minerals, including calcium.

TIPS: Those who use a Neti Pot [nasal wash] daily report little or no sinus problems, and using a humidifier should help keep home air moist during heating season.

THYROID: Rhodiola rosea- studies have proven its ability to improve thyroid activity without causing hyperthyroidism; Lemon Balm- (Melissa) helps normalize thyroid hormone whether there is too much or too little of it; Vervain (Verbena)- this applies to Vervain as well; St. John's Wort- Can be helpful when depression is present (common with LOW thyroid); Kelp- contains iodine which stimulates thyroid activity

URINARY: Blueberry/Bilberry- like cranberry, it prevents bacteria from sticking to bladder walls, thereby discouraging infections; Stinging Nettle- For prevention & treatment of kidney stones; also diuretic. Some DIURETIC herbs: Celery Seed; Parsley; Dandelion Root

VISION: Blueberry (Bilberry)- used for prevention of cataracts; treatment of macular degeneration & glaucoma; Catnip- for prevention of cataracts; Eyebright- suggested for eye health; inflammatory conditions
TIP: Antioxidants, in foods or supplements, are highly suggested for eye health and prevention of cataracts. Goji Juice has been cited for vision improvement [be sure to buy only 100% goji; not the inferior products with a little of it added to inexpensive juices like apple, grape, etc]. Also, protect the eyes from direct sun.

VARICOSE VEINS: Horse Chesnut- contains aescin, which strengthens capillaries & reduces fluid leakage; Blueberry (Bilberry)- used to stimulate new capillary formation; strengthen capillaries; increase health of circulatory system; Gotu Kola- Has 3 active compounds that work together to treat circulatory problems
